Berghes' ms., written in Münsterpumpe bei Stolberg, Germany, in 1855 (although some of the drawings are dated 1832 and 1834), describes the ruins of the settlements left by the Aztecs in their wanderings in the valley of Mexico (now the state of Zacatecas), from the legendary Aztlán to Tenochtitlán between 1116 and 1325. Accompanying his descriptions and historical background are 21 plates of maps, site and floor plans, and finely-detailled drawings in pen-and-ink and watercolor of the buildings, pyramids, terrain, and carved figures found in the ruins at La Quemada. With his discussion of the Sombrerete ruins are a map of the site and sketches of the surrounding Cerro de los Bueyes. He also includes drawings of the mountains in Tula, as well as an Aztec calendar wheel and several portraits of Indians from Zacatecas. Finally, there is a copy of the Códice Boturini, a pictorial history of the Aztec migration, copied by Berghes in 1832 from the original maguey ms. in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, with Berghes' ms. notes added in German.

112, [6] p., 21 leaves of plates (some folded) : ill., maps, plans, ports. (some col.) ; 23 x 30 cm.
